The Genocide Prevention All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) was formed at an inaugural meeting in the House of Commons on the 19th of July 2005. Over 120 Parliamentarians have joined the group.

The Genocide Prevention APPG was formed so to:

  • Ensure that the United Kingdom does all it can to prevent genocides and crimes against humanity;
  • Increase the flow of independent information and analysis to UK Parliamentarians about genocides and crimes against humanity;
  • Support Parliamentarians so as to increase the effectiveness of their scrutiny of government, and;
  • Promote understanding of the importance of long term approaches to genocide prevention.

At the groups third AGM on the 29th of November 2007, John Bercow MP (Conservative) was elected as Chair of the group and Baron Dholakia (Liberal Democrat) and Ann McKechin MP (Labour) were elected as Vice Chairs of the group.

At the groups second AGM on the 24th of October 2006, John Bercow MP (Conservative) was elected as Chair of the group and Lord Anthony Lester QC (Liberal Democrat) and Mary Creagh MP (Labour) were elected as Vice Chairs of the group.

At the groups inaugural meeting in July 2005 the former International Development Secretary of State, the Rt. Hon. Clare Short MP (Labour) was elected as the Chair of the APPG. John Bercow MP (Conservative) and Lord Anthony Lester QC (Liberal Democrat) were elected as Vice Chairs for the group.

Administration and research for the group is provided by The Aegis Trust, a genocide prevention charity based near Nottingham, UK.

All Party Parliamentary Groups are ad-hoc committees which are formed at the discretion of its members. They are required to have members from all the main UK political parties. You can find more information on APPGs and the UK Parliament here.

Generally, meetings of the group will be open to the public, though, we do ask that you contact us if you would like to be present at a particular meeting.
